In the fashion world black is a constant. It goes with nearly everything and it's sliming. I can usually tell when fashion is going through a major change based on the amount of black in a show and during a season. The runway does not lie.
As a stylist, I am always being asked questions such as:
"Is brown the new black?"
No. Not since 1994, and no it is not at this time making a comeback.
"Is pink the new black?"
"Is purple the new black?"
Sorry, but no - not this season.
A few years ago, circa 2001, white was the new black. So this year in the midst of economic upheval what is the new black for 2009?
Accessories!
Dress up your favourite looks with up to date scarves, hats, bags, shoes and that ever so important pair of designer sunglasses.
The shoe of the moment is an open-toe gladiator inspired stiletto, it is absolutely everywhere. HOT HOT HOT at the moment, although I do see it as a trend instead of an actual new style.
I'm a huge fan of scarves. I love the versatility of a good scarf, tying it in several different ways to completely change the look of a single outfit and untying it for a more utilitarian use if the weather suddenly turns cool.
I always have a few "favourite" scarves in my closet. My current favourites a black textured scarf I picked up on my last visit to France which is perfect for warm Summer nights, a grey silk scarf I picked up at a boutique here in Maine that is amazing warm on chilly Fall evenings and a black structured scarf that can slip easily around my shoulders that is perfect for winter or a night at the opera - it is designed so well it even has a hidden zipper for a cell phone and lipstick if I decide not to carry my clutch, I picked it up in DC and I used to wear it to the Kennedy Center, those were good times!
Large chunky almost 80's inspired jewelry is also HOT HOT HOT at the moment. I met a very interesting jeweler in Mystic, CT who puts Swarsky Crystals on her pieces and I am hoping to have an update on that soon.

AND I have been seeing these "skinny jeans" everywhere! I am not so sure I would dare squeeze into a pair however. There was a piece on CurrentTV about how retailers are even opening up shops that specialize in these particular jeans. I am afraid. Very afraid.
Skinny jeans were the rage THREE years ago. It's basicly like leggings - except they are jeans. It's a short-lived trend item.
Anyone still wearing this 2plus year old trend is passee. Past passeeeeeeeeeeee......
Fabulous! I am no longer frightened:)
I do what I can love ;)
