Hello blogworld! Sorry I have been so busy but finding a job in this economy has taken up most of my free time and so far I'm still looking... yeah. Anyone need an EXCELLENT Assistant? Just checking - I'm sure things will work out great.
If you missed the first episode of Rachel Zoe Season 2 on Bravo last night you missed a great show!! I was inceredibly with her Grammy style selections and even more pleased that I picked her looks for my own best dressed looks back in January. The styling I have done has been on a much smaller scale and I always find Rachel Zoe really really inspiring.
I also recently saw a cute flick: Julie and Julia [about Julia Child]. I wish the movie had had a more cohesive ending but I really liked it because lets face it I love Julia Child - I even went to see her kitchen at the Smithonian when I lived in DC. My boyfriend came with me to see the movie and even he had a good time. My favourite moment was when Julie goes to see Julia Child's Kitchen in DC and I said to my boyfriend, "Hey - that's not Julia's kitchen! That's a set!"
and I was right.... now if I can just figure out a way to put my anal retentive eye for detail into some sort of career... lol jk
Also I have to admit I am loving the new season of Project Runway on Lifetime. I think Lifetime was VERY clever to pick up that show after Bravo dropped it, I can't wait to see more of it.
Much love.

Movies on my mind
Paris fashion week has come and gone and yet - all I can think about is movies. This year the runway showed dark, sometimes veiled looks with lots of material in fabric embelishments that made me squeel with delight but right now all I can focus on is movies.
This is what happens when you move to a new area and start to spend a lot of quality time with a very quality person like the man in my life. Living close to Philly really agrees with me. I had no idea how much I missed Nordstroms - I missed it SO MUCH, I absolutely LOVE living near a mall that has one.
The man in my life and I also went to see the new Johnny Depp film "Public Enemies" [don't worry no spoilers here]. I really enjoyed the costumes, the sets and of course the Johnny Depp but the shaky camera work left me very seasick. It was like the Blair-witch-Johnny-Depp project and it really took away from the film. I am surprised by the poor filming choice in what could have been an interesting film. I recommend seeing it on DVD/Blueray so you can take breaks or multiple trips to the restroom. I think I'm still a little dizzy.
The other movie on my mind at the moment is Harry Potter. My mom is a HUGE Harry Potter fan. She even got one of the books the first day it came out. She has a lot of the books on tape and has seen every single movie at least once. I have known her to put on her "cutesy" voice and quote Harry Potter books repeatedly - although in her defense she has not done this in awhile.
Well my Mom is going to be absolutely delighted because on the DAY the new Harry Potter opens the wonderful man in my life wants to take me to see the new film. I am having dark visions of standing in long lines and overcrowded theatres and suggested waiting until next week but the sweet man in my life wants to go right away so I am doing my best to push those dark clouds out of my head and enjoy an evening out with him, we almost always have an excellent time and he is a dear sweet wonderful human being. And making my mom happy.
The last movie on my mind is "Julie and Julia" about a blogger and Julia Child. I love Julia Child. As a little girl I would watch PBS and I always found her amusing plus I do want to learn to cook properly some day.
While I was living in DC the Smithsonian's History Museum had a temporary display of her kitchen showing absolutely everything with all of the drawers exposed as if frozen in mid air, I remember 2 pairs of disposable chopsticks and was very pleased by that as well as the chance to see her kitchen up close. I wish it had been better advertized and that more people could have seen it - I must have gone at least 3 times since I lived so close and each time I noticed another interesting thing about Julia's Kitchen.
The movie "Julie and Julia" has cast Meryl Strep as Julia Child and I must admit I am looking more forward to seeing that movie than the new Harry Potter - sorry Mom! But I'm sure that I and the wonderful man in my life will have a great time tonight.
Being in a new location can take some getting used to but living 6.1 miles from the man in my life has some great advantages like movies after work on a Wednesday. Things are going really well here and I hope you are having as much fun in your life with the ones you love.

You heard it here first: the 80's are back!
Hello blog world let me use my "psychic" powers and make a little prediction for the ready to wear lines:
HELLO 80's!
With the recent passing of Michael Jackson I have heard more and more designers talking about how he influenced their lives in one way or another and there is no way that can not influence their collections.
The 80's have been poised for a come back for some time as scary as it is - and I think that this is the time when the design world harkens back to a simpler - more wealthy time and I predict the new lines will reflect that.
Art, music and fashion have been influencing each other for centuries - this is just another example of that.

Farewell dear sweet Farrah (Farrah Fawcett)
Farrah Fawcett passed away this morning in California sucoming to her fight against cancer. My heart goes out to her family and friends and to all of us who were and are her fans.
It is truly the end of an era, the woman who inspired so many of us to feather out hair and love the blondeness has passed away and has peace. Even I can admit to my feathered 'do in the '80s and a red Farrah inspired swimsuit. She will be missed.
It is also the end of an era for me personally, I am about to relocate to just outside of Philly. I love Maine and I think I will always enjoy visiting this beautiful place, but it's time for me to move on. I want to be closer to the man I am dating as well as friends and family - and an international airport - he he he.
The change of season has brought many changes in my life and I am looking forward to all of them. Don't worry dear friends - I will still be keeping in touch with you hear.

Target - and a Trader Joe's Update
I just returned from a very interesting trip to Target. I love Target, I have for many years. They gave my community several million dollars, how can you not LOVE that?
It seems they are re-doing their image a bit. I walked by the jewelry section and had a strange flash back from years ago. In a K-Mart. It really cheapened the look of their costume jewelry and I was quite frankly shocked.
Accessories ARE the new black, they are absolutely HUGE this season and the will be HUGE again in the season that is almost here. Dear sweet magical Target, how I love thee - why have you foresaken your accessories?
They have also changed the look of their Target Brands. They went from nice primary colours to a more muted pallette and the packaging is more clear with the product more visible and it has arrows instead of the traditional bullseye logo. I am not certain but I think the reasoning behind this is to save on the cost of ink on their packaging - just a guess. And while I am at it I would like to highly recommend Target brand toilet paper - good stuff!
While I was at Target I wanted to look through the DVDs for "The Holiday". It came out in 2006 and for some reason I just love it. It reminds me of "Love Actually" but I like the ending more. And low and behold Target came through: Target has the DVD of "The Holiday" for $3.98!
It's on sale now, I have no idea when the sale ends but let me reccommend that too!
I also have an update on the Portland, Maine Trader Joe's:
1. Yes, it is really happening!
2. Yes, it should be here by the end of 2009 [think December]
3. The location IS where Wild Oats used to be.
Let's all celebrate!

Trend Alert! Sparkle, Sparkle
I love fashion. I always have. I try to have a classic style that I update with the occasion trends.
The 80's are starting to sneak their way back into the fashion world yet again. This time it's the sparle factor. Think gold, silver, bronze - very metalic.
The looks I am seeing in most of the new look books is a metalic colour in a bright fitted sleeveless shirt with dark slacks and sleek slick hair.
I don't love all trends, but I might just dabble in this one.
Oh fashion, such a great distraction :)

A little Trader Joe's Review
I took a lovely trip to Boston a few days ago and stopped by a new Trader Joe's. On my way home a dear friend of mine who I knew in DC called me [she now lives in Chicago] and I promised her I would review some of my purchases at Trader Joe's.
Another recent purchase of mine was Organic Ramen from our local Hannaford. I don't happen to be a Vegetarian, but I am trying to incorporate more Vegan ingredients in my diet and the organic ramen noodles happen to be Vegan. They cost more than regular ramen and they taste a lot better. The noodles are of a better quality as well.
I tried 3 differnt kinds:
Miso Soup with Tofu: a little bland, just ok
Seaweed: also a little bland, lots of seaweed and just ok
Vegetable [I think it was Roast Vegetable] these were absolutely delicious and I would buy them again in a second!
At Trader Joe's I had even more luck. All of my perchases happen to be Vegan. It's my kick lately and I am noticing some positive effects on my health, I am not acutally a vegan but I think anything that you can do to improve your health is a good thing and I love to try new foods. I have also lost weight so I can't complain.
My Trader Joe's purchases [that I have tried thus far]:
Frozen Foods:
Vegetable Bird's Nest: delicious! A bit like an onion ring with tempura batter and other vegetables. The dipping sauce is good too.
Small Peas: wonderful! I ignored the package directions and defrosted them slowly in the microwave and ate them while they were still cold and they were heavenly. I added them in a vegan fettuchini alfredo and they were perfection.
Wild Blueberries [we call these Huckleberries in the South]: Really really excellent. My favourite breakfast is to warm them up in the microwave, add a little agave nectar and viola! Reminds me of blueberry pancakes. SO good!
Shelled Edamame: delicious!
Packaged Foods:
Brown Rice Pasta: Ziti and Spirals - both are wonderful. I am not a huge fan of reheating the pasta so I just make what I need for that meal [I do the same thing with Quinoa].
Organic Blue Corn Torilla Chips: good! A little salty and a little dry, but very tasty.
Roasted Plantain Chips: these surprised me a bit, I am used to plantains as a sweet dish so I found them to be a little salty and a bit of an odd choice for a savery snack.
Sesame Sticks: Yummy!
Organic Rice Milk: Cheap and tasty!
Fridge stuff:
Trader Joe's Orginal Hummas: A little bland - I love it with LOTS of garlic and LOTS of Lemon but it was good.
All the fresh fruits and veggies I got there were great. The organic carrots I got were perfect with the hummus. I added the sliced portabella mushrooms to my pasta and it was amazing.
I am also a big fan of the Blu sparkling waters: orginal, lime and lemon.
Hope you enjoyed my "foodie" review of Trader Joe goodness. I got a bunch of othet things I might write about later. Happy Shopping!

My new love: GPS!
I am not generally a "gadget-girl" but the wonderful man I am dating is quite techonologically aware. The past week I spent in the Philly area with him and he was kind enough to let me borrow his GPS.
And it was good. Great. Better than I thought it could be. You type in "Trader Joe's" and tada! All the locations pop up and you choose which one you would like to go to. Then it tells you and shows you the directions.
According to my fabu guy and his many fabu gadget friends the *best* GPS is the Garmin. I heard a horror story about a Sony that I wont repeat here, lets just say that I would hate to pay more than $800 and then the GPS did not work- eek!
I did make one tragic mistake though, as a rule I do not shop at Walmart ever. I had not been in one for 6 years, but during the 8 hour trip back to Maine I remembered hearing about a short cut that would take 2 hours off my trip. I was really tired and I looked for a Best Buy but could not find one. I finally broke down and went to Walmart. I was exhausted, what can I say?
Walmart was just as awful as I remembered. The sales person who "helped" me needed a GPS to find the electronics department in her own store. Poor dear, for the sad wage she must make I do not blame her at all. I finally found the correct department, the GPS, a sales associate with a key and purchases the cheapest Garmin GPS in less than an hour. I paid $159.99 before tax and after it came to around $170.
It worked instantly. I set it up, plugged it in and ta da my 8 hours were turned into 6.
Today I had to stop by Best Buy and I wish, wish, wish I had gone there instead of Walmart! Best Buy had a BETTER GPS, still a Garmin and the exact same model number - but was black and had a BIGGER screen! AND you can test it out in the store! And it cost $20 less - $139.99 for the exact same model! The sales people at Best Buy were helpful, informed and freindly - and they knew where everything in the store was located.
I absolutely love my new GPS, but if I had it to do over again I would go to Best Buy first - they really had the best BUY! I could have avoided another horrible Walmart shopping experience and gotten a better GPS for $20 less. I have learned my lesson - next time I'll go to Best Buy first!

Star trek and fashion? Yes, it's true.
There's a new Star Trek movie out. Have you heard? Cause the wonderful guy I am dating has been talking about it nonstop - since before I even knew previews for it existed. His is a bit of a trekkie. Now how can I find a way to stay sane - I mean enjoy - my wonderful guy's love of Star Trek in a way that is also interesting to me...?
Hmm.
And the answer [as is the answer to many things in my life] is
FASHION!
People say many things about Star Trek and some people are so into that they go to conventions and things, and well that is not for me; but what I do enjoy is the Costumes!
Who designed for the new movie?
Michael Kaplan *who also designed for cult classics Blade Runner, Fight Club and Flash Dance just to name a few.
I have to admit my favourite Star Trek and costumes were on Star Trek Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager all designed by
Robert Blackman aka Bob Blackman
sublime!
But I always have a special place in my heart for the classic Star Trek costumes designed by the late, great William Ware Theiss who also designed for the classic Harold and Maude.
Sometimes you just can't beat a classic, and sometimes you have to see a sci-fi film because the the wonderful man in your life is super into it, oh and it is supposed to be good. IMAX away! lol

^GREAT* Sale at Macy's!
When I have an amazing shopping experience I like to share it. Yesterday I popped into my local Macy's and it was incredible.
As I walked into Macy's [I prefer the entrance near men's wear] 2 sales associates were talking less than a foot from the front door, a bit odd I thought they will probably ignore me - and boy was I wrong! One of the sales associates said "Hello, how are you today? Would you like a coupon for an extra 25% off?"
Yes I would. I thanked him and he said "Happy Shopping!". He had an amazing attitude, so cheerful and a kind not at all pushy persona. Coupon in hand I stopped by the jewelry counter to see what Givenchy, Kenneth Cole and Alfini are up to - when I was offered another coupon! I let them know I already had one, thank you.
As I tried on necklaces I overheard sales people all offering coupons to all their customers and telling them about the "friends and family sale" basically an extra 25% off for nearly everything in the store.
I found 2 necklaces I liked and one that I loved! So I texted the man in Philly I am dating pics of the necklaces and asked him which one he liked [gotta love modern technology!] and tried to make up my own mind. I had the excellent sales associate "Beth K" put my necklace on hold for the rest of the night while I continues my shopping.
My necklace of choice was an Alfini silver necklace with several chains of different weight/thickness/lengths and had an unusual clasp that was super easy to use. It was $36 so I really had to think about it.
I headed off to shoes where they were swamped and had to rationalize myself out of buying a pair Anne Klein's that were slightly too big and $79.99, sigh - twas not to be.
Then I checked out the perfume area. Normally I avoid that part of the store as I am sensative to certain smells but I had seen the Calvin Klein commercial for "Euphoria" and I wanted to see what it smelled like. Also the ad said if you spend $70 you get a free orchid and I wanted more information. This is the one area of the store where I literally had to track down a sales person and when I did she did not know anything about the commercial AND her keys would not open the perfume cabinet where the larger bottles were kept. I wont print her name here poor dear, she was probably filling in and I don't think this was her counter.
She *did* tell me that after you spend $70 or more on perfume you fill out a form and they send you the free orchid in the mail - that's interesting I wonder how that works exactly. There were 2 versions of Euphoria - one was a "Spring" version which was a lighter and more floral/fruity scent. The orginal Euphoria was a bit too musky for me but the Spring/lighter scent was nice and I might go back and get that one at a later date.
Next I ventured to clothes and implimented my favourite shopping trick; I pick out everything I like in the entire department. Then I take it all to the price scanner and scan my 30-40 items to be sure nothing I picked out is over $100 or whatever price limit I set for myself/my client that day. Nothing was over $85 so I carried my giant pile of clothes to the dressing room. As I try clothing on I am always sure to return it to the hanger [this helps the over-worked sales associates more than you can imagine] and I hand things in 3 places: 1. yes 2. no 3. maybe.
I return my "no" pile to the rolling rack the sales associates leave for unwanted clothing. Then I take my yes+maybe clothes back to scanner to see now that I know how everything fits = how much each item is. There were only 2 items I really liked: a cadigan and a knitted tank that reminded me of Twiggy or Audrey Hepburn - it was black with a light band around the neck that emphasized the shape of the garment and was a calbe knit below. It was the sort of thing that you think might not look good on you but you try it on and "WOW".
The cardigan was more than I wanted to pay and my 10 or 12 "maybes" just didn't work for me so I ended up with just the cable knit top. I scanned it and it was $9.99!
I checked out kitchen wear and saw a Black&Decker rice cooker for $24.99 which made me giggle, not the brand you think of when you think rice cookers.
New shirt in hand, and on hanger, I returned to jewelry and decided that since I didn't get the $79.99 shoes or the $83 silk shirt or the $70 jacket or the $40 cardigan that I would go ahead and splurge on the $36 necklace. I had the coupon after all and I haven't bought anything at all for myself other than things like groceries and cell phone batteries in a really long time.
"Beth K" was happy to help me out. She was surprised when my fabulous shirt rang up as $9.99 but not as surprised as I was when she gave me the total: $17.79!
The necklace I had fallen in love with was also on sale - that combined with the coupon and the great price on the shirt meant I saved $67.43!
*Another great tip about Macy's: if you ask they will let you keep the hanger you clothing came on, and I kept my hanger! Also if your hanger breaks - they are recyclable.
I can't believe I only speny $17.79 at Macy's on 2 such amazing and well made items! This was less than I would have paid at say JC Penny's, TJ Maxx, or Marshall's - all places known for having cheap things and at TJ Maxx and Marshall's it would have been last season's not the beautiful current items I found at Macy's. As "Beth K" said, when "Macy's has a sale - you can't beat their prices."
Happy Shopping!
The Truth about Cell Phones
Hello blog world. This is a post I have wanted to write for a long time and *now* I have a great reason to publish it.
Cell phones [aka Mobile phones for my friends abroad] have become a staple of modern life. If you travel long distances you need one. If you are in the business world - you *have* to have ones.
There are a few things you need to know about cell phones.
Rule # 1:
The battery always dies first. So when you buy your phone buy the extra battery.
In most cell phones the battery will go bad before any other component will fail. Sometimes the battery is not charged properly, other times - in my case - it simplies dies from overuse. Batteries can only last for so long and after a few months they hold a charge for less time, then less time than that, until finally they will not hold a charge at all.
When you have an extra battery it eases the strain on BOTH batteries and if one does go bad, ta da: you already have a back up.
Rule #2:
Cell Phone models AND batteries are only made for a certian amount of time.
Usually by the time your battery dies, your cell phone company no longer makes your model or cell phone AND no longer makes or sells your battery. So you know what happens next: YOU end up buying a whole new phone when all you really needed was a new battery. It's not just you; nearly every person I know who owns a cell phone has had this happen to them, so the simple solution is: buy the extra battery when you buy the phone. Spend $40 instead of $120.
Another added benefit is that with 2 batteries when you are in the middle of a conversation and your battery loses it's charge and you lose the call - instead of waiting to re-charge your battery you simply pop out the battery and pop in the already charged spare battery. I can't tell you how many times this has helped me over the years.
*Also: go for the extended life battery. The longer a battery holds a charge the better.
Rule #3:
Brand does matter. Go for an LG!
My first cell phone was a Samsung. It was awful. It spent more time as a paperweight than as a useful device. Even with the extra battery.
Before I got another cell phone I decided to ask my friends about their cell phone experiences and I found a surprising pattern: Samsung and Motorola seemed to wear out the fastest, but my friends with LGs seemed to have better quality phones that lasted longer.
So I got an LG and the extended life battery. Any my cell phone lasted for FOUR YEARS. Compared to the 8 months my Samsung lasted I was thrilled. I later found out that four years is nearly a world record in cell phone life spans. My LG finally died of software failure and could not be revived. I got another LG and I love it.
Rule #4:
Your cell phone service provider matters. A LOT.
I got my first cell phone when I was living in DC, and my first cell phone service provider was Sprint. MISTAKE! The coverage area was so small it did not include my own house or my office at work. If I wanted to get a signal at work I had to go out of my office building and stand at a certain spot next to a tree in the hopes of finding one bar - very inconvienent to say the least - especially in the rain. My coworkers with Verzion happily chatted away at their desks while I went out in the snow in hopes of finding that one bar.
Another problem I had with Sprint was the lost calls. If I was on the cell for more than 5 minutes, my call would drop. When I called Sprint's Customer Service about this I was told it was normal for my service area. Normal? I lived in DC not up the mountains or away from cell phone towers. Also, not all of my experiences with Sprint's Customer Service people were pleasant.
The BIGGEST problem I had was that my Sprint service did not extend to the tunnels of the metro in DC. I was on the train for 1.5 - 2 hours each way commuting and Sprint had opted to NOT extend coverage to the tunnels of the DC Metro - the only company that put lines down for so it's customers would have service in the tunnels was Verizon. So while I sat on a packed metro train stuck in a tunnel my neighbors who had Verizon made call after call, while I had the old "service not available". A co-worker of mine at the University in DC also worked for Verizon [he told me about the tunnels and some other really neat facts about the company] and after talking to him I decided that as soon as my 2 years of manditory Sprint service was over I knew Verizon was the way to go in the US.
Another issue with Sprint - and all other cell phone companies was that my parents live way up in the blue ridge mountains in Virgina and there was no cell phone service there at all - unless, you had Verizon.
The moment my contract with Sprint was up I switched to Verizon. I could keep my current cell number and suddenly I had coverage at work, in my house, in the train tunnels, in my parents house and nearly every place I went. *In the US. Verizon does not offer service abroad, so when I went to France - no cell service, but in the US Verizon is impossible to beat.
Another example of Sprint's crappy customer service was my last phone call to that company when I cancelled my account and to join Verizon. Sprint was RUDE. They argued with me - they even yelled at me when I told the reason that I was switching plans was that I wanted better service and a larger service area. Talk about a lasting impression. I'd never go back to them unless I had no other options at all.
With Verizon, if I am going to go over my minutes or text messages - they contact me to see if I want to increase my plan instead of paying per minute or per text for the excess.
My most recent experience was a wonderful one. I called my local Verizon mobile store to see if they still made my battery [my phone is the first generation and they are now on generation 3] and the lovely, kind sales associate said yes, and they are on clearance AND they could ship them to my house AND they could add it to my Verizon Bill AND they had 2 day shipping AND they came the next day [not even 2 days!] AND the sales associate answered my questions while placing the order for me.
I can't say enough good things about Verizon and my LG phone. I've had the best experiences ever, Verizon might cost a little more but it's absoultely worth every cent.
Happy moble-ing!

Accessories are the new black
In the fashion world black is a constant. It goes with nearly everything and it's sliming. I can usually tell when fashion is going through a major change based on the amount of black in a show and during a season. The runway does not lie.
As a stylist, I am always being asked questions such as:
"Is brown the new black?"
No. Not since 1994, and no it is not at this time making a comeback.
"Is pink the new black?"
"Is purple the new black?"
Sorry, but no - not this season.
A few years ago, circa 2001, white was the new black. So this year in the midst of economic upheval what is the new black for 2009?
Accessories!
Dress up your favourite looks with up to date scarves, hats, bags, shoes and that ever so important pair of designer sunglasses.
The shoe of the moment is an open-toe gladiator inspired stiletto, it is absolutely everywhere. HOT HOT HOT at the moment, although I do see it as a trend instead of an actual new style.
I'm a huge fan of scarves. I love the versatility of a good scarf, tying it in several different ways to completely change the look of a single outfit and untying it for a more utilitarian use if the weather suddenly turns cool.
I always have a few "favourite" scarves in my closet. My current favourites a black textured scarf I picked up on my last visit to France which is perfect for warm Summer nights, a grey silk scarf I picked up at a boutique here in Maine that is amazing warm on chilly Fall evenings and a black structured scarf that can slip easily around my shoulders that is perfect for winter or a night at the opera - it is designed so well it even has a hidden zipper for a cell phone and lipstick if I decide not to carry my clutch, I picked it up in DC and I used to wear it to the Kennedy Center, those were good times!
Large chunky almost 80's inspired jewelry is also HOT HOT HOT at the moment. I met a very interesting jeweler in Mystic, CT who puts Swarsky Crystals on her pieces and I am hoping to have an update on that soon.

Happy Earth Day!
My apologizes blogworld, I have been a bad, bad blogger. I would like to blame the economy and my still ongoing search for a new permanent postion.
On a brighter note:
Hannaford's stores in my area are giving away free re-usable shopping bags for Earth Day!
(Hannaford's is a great grocery store, simliar to a Harris Teeter in the north eastern United States.)
In other news:
Trader Joe's is still planning on being in the Portland Maine area by the end of 2009!
Rachel Zoe is filming the Rachel Zoe Project II for Bravo and I can't wait to see it!
And Project Runway is moving to the Lifetime Network.
More news soon!

Fashion Week!
One of the most exciting times of the year for me as a stylist is FASHION WEEK!
I love seeing what deisgners come up with, what's next and what will be the packing the stores soon.
This year was a big return to 80's fashion. Sholder pads. BIG sholder pads. Tight pants. I even saw some neon colors thrown in there.
Another strong influence was a tough of 60's mod fashion, especially in make up. A dark heavy lid and high constasts. So visually interesting.
Strong primary and secondary colors were featured very heavily, especially as an accent to an all black outfit. I even saw the most intersting look: all black with a monocromatic hat in a orange or purple. Very much in the feeling of the 80s, but yet some how modern, re-done and new.
Another HUGE trend is shoes. I kept seeing the same sillouette: an ankle length boot with at least a 3 inch+ heel that had laces. Accessories are absolutely gigantic this season, and when you think about it, that's really clever because you can update your current wardrobe with a few key accessories. These designers are brilliant I tell you, just brilliant.

More Trader Joe's Buzz
Just a little update on the Trader Joe's in Portland Buzz:
http://avecfashion.blogspot.com/2009/02/i-love-trader-joes.html
Yesterday I stopped by the Whole Foods in Portland and mentioned to the cashier that I had heard Trader Joe's was coming to Portland Maine and she said that she had heard the same thing, and the buzz was all around the store. So even the competition knows, pretty cool.
So it looks like Trader Joe's really is coming to Portland Maine!

I love Trader Joe's!
I have been dating a wonderful man who lives near Philly for several months. I drive down from Maine to see him every few weeks. This 8 hour journey takes me past New York and Boston so sometimes I stop by the stores Maine does not have. On my way back home I stopped by Trader Joe's in Boston and I got the BEST NEWS!
For those of you who don't know, Trader Joe's is a grocery store like a cheap version of Whole Foods where you can get wonderful foods at resonable prices and organic foods too. Some of their items are just incredibly cheap. The prices change a lot and the stock changes some what too, but I can tell you I got amazing organic navel oranges for 39 cents each.
As I was going through the check out line and talking with the very, very helpful employees about what would and would not make the 2 hour trip back to my house in Maine I joked around like I always do about how they really *should* open a store in Maine for me, the cashier said, "Oh we are. The guys in the warehouse have been talking about it all week."
I said something like oh really? And the next thing you know another co-worker comes over and COMFIRMS that there will be a Trader Joe's opening in Portland Maine!
There is no word on WHEN or exactly WHERE this store will open but the distrubutors at the Massachusetts Warehouse for Trader Joe's are already making plans to send things up north to the future Portland Maine location - and this is from the word of mouth of Boston store employees - always a good sign!

Trader Joe's is coming to Portland Maine!

Grammy Awards LOVE
The 51st Annual Grammy Awards have come and gone and WOW what a lot to take in on the red carpet!
This year was all about geometric shapes, clevage, slick smooth hair and 80's references.
Another reoccuring theme: the almost overuse of detail. The details of certain garmets seemed to take over entire enembles!
I have to give snaps to Coldplay for the Sgt. Pepper inspired jackets. I liked them. Even the pink one.
This was all about contrasts. Either the dress was short and above the knee or had a train, a long train or a super long train. The dress was either completely symetrical or the fabulous asymetical one sleeve that is all the rage this season.
There was also some AMAZING hair! Paris Hylton: didn't like the dress, but love love LOVED the hair. Jennifer Hudson: OOOO interesting dress - very geometric, very retro 80's; wonderful colours and I loved her hair! Love love LOVED her hair! Audrina Patridge had a side bob that was beautiful, I loved the contrast of her hair - unsymetrical and her dress - symetrical, lovely and her handbag was amazing.
Best Leggings of the night: Cyndi Laupher. She looked beautiful. Totally retro 80's but updated. I love her. I even loved her white blonde hair.

Sale Watch - Possible Store Closings
There is a lot of buzz about finance in the news lately so here is a list of stores in trouble. Some of these stores will be closing multiple locations, others might just be closing. Either way it's a chance for a savy shopper to find some great sales, that being said I would absolutely not buy a gift card from the following places:
Closing:
Circuit City
Linens N' Things
Meryns
Sharper Image
Closing some locations and/or in serious financial trouble:
Ann Taylor
Catherine's
Eddie Bauer
Fashion Bug
Gap
Kmart
Lane Bryant
Pacific Sunwear
Sears
Starbucks
Timberland
Zales
Also:
Sprint Nextel cellphones are in big trouble. My first cell phone was with Sprint. I left them for Verizon. I have to say that I absolutley *love* Verizon. Not only does Verizon work in the teenie tiny town I am from (where my parents still live), but they have better customer service, better plans, and of course better coverage than Sprint.
One of my good friends in DC had a gift card for Circuit City and has had the worst time trying to redeem it. The store she went to first refused to honor her gift card and then told her they no longer carried what she needed. She ended up with nothing but a headache. They did tell her that they will be accepting gift cards until the end of March, but they gave her the impression that that might not be the case without actually saying so.
If you have gift cards for any of the stores on this list I would use them *NOW* because you never know what tomorrow will bring and while I think we are in store for better times ahead not all of these stores will still be around when the tough times are over, so better to be safe than sorry with your gift cards.
I think once our economy rights itself it will be a great time for local businesses to find and /or keep their niches in the market and it will be exciting times for savy business people.

Michelle Obama wears a Jason Wu for the Inauguration Ball!
Michelle Obama dazzled us all in a white chiffon one sholder creation by designer Jason Wu at the Inaugural Ball. This is s moment not only in fashion history, but in American History.
I lived in DC for a number of years and my house was on Capitol Hill. I lived next to a park and from that pak you could see the Capitol Building, we used to watch the Fouth of July Fireworks from there. The Capitol is on the edge of the National Mall so sometimes I would walk or take the metro to the museums there. National Gallery of Art and the Smithsonian Museums line the Mall with some of the most amazing sites on earth.
When I was a little girl my Mom took my sister and I to the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History and we walked through the wonderful exhibit of dresses from past First Ladies, which I will always think of as the "Hall of Dresses". How thrilling it was when as a small child I could see pieces of history through out the ages in these beautiful gowns for Inagural Ball and Inaugration Day dresses. Jackie Kennedy's dress was always a particular favorite of mine - I've always loved fashion.
What a thrill it will be in years to come when I can bring my own children to the Smithonsian's National Museum of American History and take them to the "Hall of Dresses" and see Michelle Obama's Ball Gown!

Michelle Obama wears Isabel Toledo for Inauguration Day!
Michelle Obama is wearing a beautiful gold Isabel Toledo dress to Inauguration Day!
Isabel Toledo is the creative Director for Anne Klein and Michelle has rocked her styles before.
Michelle Obama looks SO beautiful! She really is having a fashion moment and her outfit has real impact.
Our new President: Barack Obama is wearing a long black jacket, black suit, white shirt and red tie.
When they met the Bushes for the traditional coffee at the White House, Michelle Obama towered over both of them - yes, she is taller than W. I was a bit surprised to see Laura Bush in a powder blue suit dress with a quite short skirt with light tights and black shoes that were not flattering to her cankles, her stylist really owes her an apology and I hope she gets a new stylist when she moves to Texas today. On behalf of America let me just say: GOODBYE!
And on be half of America let me just say a giant HELLO and WELCOME to the new first family!
This is a beautiful moment in history and I am so proud of the progress we have made!

Inauguration Buzz!
Before moving to the breath taking coast of Maine, I lived on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. At the moment everyone in my life is super excited about the upcoming Inauguration of the 44th President of the United States: Barack Obama.
While I am also thrilled about this upcoming event, I have to admit I'm even more excited to see what Michelle Obama will be wearing! Remember what Jackie was wearing when John F. Kennedy was sworn in? I do! Ok, I wasn't old enough to be watch then but I love the pictures. I love how this is not only a moment in American History, but it might project Michelle Obama into fashion history as a new fashion icon.
Living in Maine has a lot of great advantages one of them is that I happened to have a lovely chat with Ann Perrino, the genius behind Ann Veronica bags. She owns the enchanting store on Shore Road in Cape Elizabeth, ME. If you haven's checked out her bags yet don't walk - RUN to her site immediately. They will keep those winter blues away! Ann mentioned that she wanted to gift bags to our nation's new first daughters. What an amazing idea! I had this instant idea of how amazing it would be on that cold day in January to see the first family standing together, dressed to the nines, and the first daughters with Ann Veronica bags!
http://www.annveronica.com/
I should ask my dear friend Jason Gallimore who writes for the Common Progressive amoung other things if he knows whom to contact to arrange for some gift giving. If you haven't seen the Common Progressive yet, check it out immediately for GREAT political insights.

I can't wait for Tuesday! I a lot of my firends and some former clients in DC have called me to ask what they should wear to the 2009 Presidential Inauguration this is what I have been telling them:
1. Comfortable Shoes. Traffic will be awful and you will be doing a lot of walking.
2. Dress Warm. Wear long johns and tights under your clothes. Bring a hat scarves, gloves, mittens as well as some of those instant hand warmers. You might want to skip the thermos full of coffee because of all the security rsstrictions. I also recommend ear warmers.
3. Great Outer Wear. Since it is going to be COLD what you have on the outside, your jacket, your hat and your gloves will be seen most so wear your best looking ones and be sure that you are dressed in layers and that you are wearing enough layers.
4. Be prepared to wait. Security will be tighter than it has ever been. Be sure you are aware of all the restrictions BEFORE you leave the house, there are lots of offical websites to check out for that.
5. Enjoy the moment! You will be witnessing a moment in history that will change our world in an incredibly postive way, forever! Lucky you!

For the love of Rachel Zoe
Yesterday was the Golden Globe Awards. It's always exciting - winners, losers, and of course: the BEST and worst dressed.
I'm a huge fan of Rachel Zoe and The Rachel Zoe Project on BRAVO! is one of my all time favorite reality tv shows. Part of my background is as a stylist and I have helped more people get ready for more events big and small than I can count so well, Rachel Zoe is kind of my hero. The designers she knows, the people she gets to work with, her style and her ability to style others.. I have only one word for her: fabulous!
I'm not sure exactly who Rachel Zoe's current clients are, but I was surprised when I saw a "worst dressed" Golden Globe list and there were several people that might have been her clientele on that list; including: Cameron Diaz, Debra Messing, and Renee Zellweger.
Cameron Diaz wore a long pink Chanel Couture dress. It had one shoulder strap and was asymmetrical in a sort of perfection of asymmetry. The color was great on her and her hair perfectly mirrored the dress and framed her face. She looked lovely. Her blue eyes sparkled and she looked like she was happy. The dress was revealing enough to show off her amazing figure without being too revealing.
Debra Messing wore a dark blue Vera Wang floor length dress with a bit of a train that had a halter strap that wrapped around her neck. The color of this dress was perfect for her, the accessories with this dress were as Rachel Zoe would say: bananas. Spot on perfect accessories. Her smile was the best part of the ensemble. She was radiant and the color of the dress was perfect for a winter event.
Renee Zellweger wore a black organza Carolina Herrera top and the most amazing skirt. The only misstep of this outfit was the sheerness of the top, perhaps it would have more interesting with something different underneath, even so I love, love, love the shape of this ensemble. It looked amazing on her. The skirt alone was a triumph. Paired with that top and it was perfection. She looked statuesque.
So Rachel Zoe, if they were your clients and you have time to read the blogs of amateur stylists like me: well done. Another triumph. And I think you are fantastic.

Huge Discount Watch: *Macy's* and *Bloomingdales*
Macy's just announced that they will be closing ELEVEN stores in NINE states.
Clearance sales will start next week at the affected stores.
The known locations are:
Los Angeles, West Palm Beach, Fla., Nashville, Tenn., and St. Louis.
There will be more, those are just the ones that are being announced now.
A little inside speculation and what to watch for:
Since sales are down for Macy's I am relatively certain that all Macy's will start offering great sales during this period of adjustment.
ALSO:
Since the parent company that owns Macy's also owns Bloomingdale's I suspect that there will be some amazing sales at your local Bloomingdales as well.
If you have credit cards for Macy's or Bloomingdales, first of all be certain you pay off those balances right away 25% interest yikes!, secondly check your mailboxes and emails for huge "savings passes" and discount coupons this season.
I'm a huge fan of my local Macy's and this is a great oppurtunity to pick up some wonderful items at big discounts.
