I have been dating a wonderful man who lives near Philly for several months. I drive down from Maine to see him every few weeks. This 8 hour journey takes me past New York and Boston so sometimes I stop by the stores Maine does not have. On my way back home I stopped by Trader Joe's in Boston and I got the BEST NEWS!
For those of you who don't know, Trader Joe's is a grocery store like a cheap version of Whole Foods where you can get wonderful foods at resonable prices and organic foods too. Some of their items are just incredibly cheap. The prices change a lot and the stock changes some what too, but I can tell you I got amazing organic navel oranges for 39 cents each.
As I was going through the check out line and talking with the very, very helpful employees about what would and would not make the 2 hour trip back to my house in Maine I joked around like I always do about how they really *should* open a store in Maine for me, the cashier said, "Oh we are. The guys in the warehouse have been talking about it all week."
I said something like oh really? And the next thing you know another co-worker comes over and COMFIRMS that there will be a Trader Joe's opening in Portland Maine!
There is no word on WHEN or exactly WHERE this store will open but the distrubutors at the Massachusetts Warehouse for Trader Joe's are already making plans to send things up north to the future Portland Maine location - and this is from the word of mouth of Boston store employees - always a good sign!
Trader Joe's is coming to Portland Maine!

I think that is fabulous news for Portland! I think that a Trader Joes will work very well there. Portland is such a wonderful city for foodies anyway...I wonder how upset Whole Foods is about this...or the smaller markets like Rosemont or the Public Market on Monument Square.
So far only Whole Foods seems a tiny bit nervous, mostly I think people are happy to have the variety - plus it's not a reality yet ;)
